US investigates Toyota RAV4 after reports of engine fire

The US government already has eleven reports of a Toyota RAV4 service engine fire. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) this Monday (1st), the model recall in the country will affect nearly 1.9 million vehicle owners.

According to Business Insider , a Toyota spokesman said the automaker is working on an investigation with the NHTSA. All complaints so far have been registered in 2020 regarding car models produced between 2013 and 2018, many of which have a range of up to 80,000 kilometers.

The reported fires have occurred in vehicles with 12-volt batteries on the left side of the engine. In addition to a fire, a RAV4 with a problem may also have a power outage and shutdown. One of the hypotheses put forward by the agency attributed the fire to head-on collisions or poorly installed batteries.

Four fires broke out in unattended vehicles, and at least two were parked. When the owners returned, the latter were completely consumed by the flames. Most of the RAV4 caught fire on the move after stopping.

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a report that the recall will include three models: 75,680 Kona SUVs, 5,716 Ioniq units, and 305 Elec City buses. Part of the latter caught fire in the last 15 days when returning to the garage after inspection.
